According to Reuters, the Ceo of Telegram, Pavel Durov, was arrested in France on August 24, 2024, for failing to cooperate with law enforcement. Authorities allege that Telegram allowed users to abuse the app for illegal activities, including drug trafficking, distribution of child sexual abuse material, and fraud. Currently, Durov is required to remain in France for the ongoing investigation.
Telegram is known for offering privacy to its users, but this policy shift will mark a great change in the company’s data and privacy laws.
Another change with the app is, that it now uses AI and a human moderation team to filter out illegal content from its search results.
Although the changes may affect the popularity of the app among users, the app can stay compliant, avoid further legal troubles and improve its relationship with regulatory bodies. As reported by the Guardian, these standards put in place for improved content moderation could make Telegram more attractive to investors, and potentially lead to increased funding. Normally, investors prefer companies that operate within legal frameworks and prioritize user safety.
