for the primary reason being failure to appoint a legal representative in the country, which is a requirement for compliance with local laws, many users have found alternative ways to stay connected.
Many users in Brazil have turned to VPNs to access the platform. However, using VPNs comes with a fine of 50,000 Brazilian Real, approximately USD 9,000 according to reports from Business Insider. This move was made to discourage users from bypassing restrictions and accessing the platform. Other Brazilians have also moved to alternative popular platforms like Bluesky with 2 million new users from Brazil, Threads with 200,000 news users and Mastodon with a significant increase in the number of users from Brazil.
Bluesky is a social media network initiated on October 4 2021 by Jack Dorsey. The platform allows users to control their data, privacy and security and focuses on chronological feeds without using algorithms. Meaning, that users see content in the order they were posted, giving them control over the content they see and therefore providing transparency.
Next is Threads, founded on July 5, 2023, which is also a social media platform developed by Meta and allows users to control who can see and interact with their posts and who cannot. However, unlike Bluesky, it uses algorithms to show users stories likely of interest to them. It is also integrated with Instagram to allow users to share posts and stories between the two platforms.
And Mastodon which was founded in October 2016 is a social media platform, which is similar to Bluesky, and provides users with a chronological feed without the use of algorithms.
It’s interesting to see how quickly these platforms have gained traction in Brazil in response to the ban on X. As the situation continues to evolve, we will see how these changes will shape the future of social media in Brazil.
